National Museum of Photography, Film and Television

National Museum of Photography, Film and Television
Based in Bradford, the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television (NMPFT) opened in 1983 to explore the history, aesthetics, art and science of the visual medium in photography, film and television. Its rare archives, renowned collections, interactive displays and special exhibitions examine still and moving images and their relationship to developing technologies. For instance, while the cinematography collection charts the historical processes of film production with early optical apparatus such as the praxinscope and the magic lantern, the museum’s own Pictureville cinema and IMAX cinema screen (at 52'×64', the largest in Britain) illustrate their evolution in the modern era. In 1998, the Imaging Frontiers programme prepared an expanded NMPFT for the digital and multimedia communications age.
